Adventures on the Real Hogwarts Express

Adventures on the Real Hogwarts Express

The UK is a well-known literary paradise and as a self-proclaimed “book nerd,” I was excited to explore the stomping grounds of C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll, William Shakespeare, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Michael Bond and Charles Dickens to name a few. However, one of my favorite moments of the trip came with a more modern literary connection when my love of Harry Potter and affinity for trains combined for a perfect afternoon on the Real Hogwarts Express.

The Real Hogwarts Express Jacobite Steam Train

The Glenfinnan Viaduct might be one of the most iconic locations Scotland that was made famous in the Harry Potter Movies
The Jacobite Steam Train aka Hogwarts Express takes its riders on a magical journey through Scotland. Winding through the Highlands from Fort William to Mallaig on the West Highland Railway Run, riders voyage along the same route that the real Hogwarts Express and the flying car travel in the films. The Glenfinnan Viaduct might be one of the most iconic locations in Scotland, especially since appearing as Harry Potter’s gateway to his education.

An afternoon of Magic

A short stop at the Glenfinnan station is a highlight on the real Hogwarts Express Jacobite Train in Scotland
Luckily, our afternoon aboard the train offered majestic views and butterbeer hot cocoa, but no dementors. About half way through the journey to Mallaig, the train stops for a moment in Glenfinnan, offering riders the opportunity to stretch their legs, tour the small but informational West Highland Railway Museum (for an admission fee) and visit the dining car for a mid-trip snack.

Exploring the town of Mallaig

The small fishing town of Mallaig is the end of the line on the Jacobite Steam Train or better known as the Real Hogwarts Express
After the short stop, the adventure continues to the fishing port and charming town of Mallaig. Be sure to wander around, grab a bite to eat and explore the shops before the train heads back to Fort William. Also note that the ferry to the Isle of Skye departs out of Mallaig, so if you are adding that to your Scotland experience and are able to make the timetable work, you can take the Jacobite one way and hop on the ferry.

The Relaxing Return to Fort William

Views of the Scottish Highlands from the real Hogwarts Express Jacobite Steam Train
Of course, the trip back to Fort William is just as magical, but does not stop in Glenfinnan so grab a snack before the train departs. Or you can order one of the many treat packages offered by the Jacobite for an additional charge. Packages available include, High Tea, Champagne, Chocolates and Artisan Cheeses.

Once in Fort William, take the 5-minute walk into town and explore their brick laid streets, wonderful pubs, unique shops and lovely landscape – the town sits at the base of the highest mountain in Britain – Ben Nevis and is surrounded by Loch Linnhe. While in this part of Scotland, we stayed at a beautiful Airbnb in Fort William and loved our weekend there.

How to book a ticket on the Hogwarts Express

Riding the rails on the Real Hogwarts Express Jacobite Steam Train
Round trip tickets for the train range from £35-59 for adults and £20-32 for children depending on whether you choose first class or standard fares. You can also book a private table for two for £121. We had standard fare tickets and it was quite lovely. However, if you want the full Potter experience, the first-class cabins are nice and look similar to the private cars in which you see the characters ride in the film. Be sure to book in advance as we traveled in April and had to switch our travel plans around to accommodate the trip. We booked only two weeks ahead and the date we originally wanted was sold out. The train schedule changes depending on the season, so be sure to check that it is in service when you are making your plans.

The 84-mile round trip journey on the Jacobite Steam Train is not to be missed. While it will certainly spark the imagination of every Potterhead, it offers a spectacular adventure for mere muggles as well. Not only am I a huge fan of the Harry Potter books and films, but I have loved trains since I got a train set for Christmas when I was a kid. When we travel, I am constantly on the lookout for the chance to check another train adventure off my bucket list, steam engines preferred. The Hogwarts Express fulfilled a dream and was everything I had hoped for – if only I had boarded at Platform 9 and 3/4.

  1. A lovely day out for families and Harry Potter fans! I have heard that this route has become very popular and for that reason I thought that the ticket price might have been higher. If I was to take this train journey I might splash out on a table for two or private car with high tea! Interesting to read about this experience, thank you

  2. I have not been on the Hogwarts Express, but I have seen it chuffing over the Glenfinnan Viaduct! Fabulous sight! Good advice to book early: we did not and there were no tickets available when we were in the area. We were actually staying not far from Mallaig in the campervan, but we drove the bridge to Skye rather than taking the ferry. The west coast of Scotland is a beautiful part of the world.

  3. I would love to just see a steam train one day, let alone ride on one. This shall have to squeeze into my itinerary if ever in the UK next.

  4. The most important question that I have is did Eric spring for the High Tea for you? I am sad that I missed this when I visited Scotland, as I too am a train-loving Potterphile. Have you been to Alaska? The glass-domed train ride from Seward to Anchorage was my favorite!

  5. I’m not even a HP fan and would LOVE to experience this. I think the price is very reasonable for the amazing experience. It’s a great way to explore Scotland and I adore brick laid streets 🙂

    1. Yeah, I like the Harry Potter movies but actually never read the books. But Darcee I think read them 2x. But either way, the adventure on the Jacobite Train was great for both types of fans. It wasn’t too over-the-top Harry Potter cheeky because the scenery in this part of Scotland is the REAL highlight!

  6. Hoping that the people of Scotland support their local community and buy local produce while we recover from the virus.

  7. First, I’ve never been on a train. Second, I’m not sure Hogwarts is one of the places I’d want to visit. Maybe it’s because I’m not a fan.

  8. Wow train journey must ahce been really fun. I have never gone for any joinery like this but would love to go.

  9. Oh wow, it’s great you can get to go on the Hogwarts Express. I think my kids would love it. The views must be amazing!!!!

  10. The views are so lovely! I love taking train rides to the countryside. If I do find myself in Scotland, I have to make sure that I go on this train trip!

    1. Yeah, Darcee LOVES any type of train adventure, but the Real Hogwarts Express Jacobite Steam Train out of Fort William, Scotland may have been her favorite thus far!

  11. I’ve always wanted to visit the UK, but thought that I’d just spend my time taking photos of pretty buildings – and whilst that would be fun, that would be a very expensive holiday that I could do literally anywhere. However, now that I know THIS exists, I know that I have an actual, worth-the-money reason to visit 😍 I just hope this is still up and running in the far-off future when the world is back to its new normal and I can travel overseas!

    1. Well, the Hogwarts Express Jacobite Steam Train is part of the real train system out of Fort William, Scotland that allows transport to and from the area. Plus with Ben Nevis right there and Loch Ness nearby, this train system is active and running currently!

  12. We typically go back yearly to see family in the UK and I would LOVE to do this on our next trip. We found some streets in York that we’re very like Diagon Ally!

    1. Whoa, now that is very cool! We missed out on York on our last U.K. adventure, so I will definitely have to add the Diagon Alley Adventure in York, England to Darcee’s next Harrry Potter Bucket List Adventure!

  13. I’d so, so love to go on this adventure one day! Butterbeer cocoa? How does that even taste? The UK has such beautiful and historic towns and even if this wasn’t linked to HP, it still would be worth experiencing.

    1. I have to agree Kemi! Of course, we loved the real Harry Potter Train Experience aboard the Jacobite Steam Train. But, our adventures in Fort William, Scotland were amazing. With Ben Nevis towering overhead, the old town, Loch Ness nearby, and so many other things we missed out on, we could have spent another week in this amazing part of the U.K.

  14. Bingo, I too want to go to UK for feel the rich literary heritage and after reading your post I would love to hop on this Unique Hogwarts Express. Glenfinnan Viaduct looks so classic. I am sold to this idea when in UK. Thanks a lot.

  15. Although I am not personally a Harry Potter fan, I would take this train trip just for the photography aspects of it. Seriously, wow! I am hopefully visiting Scotland (actually the entire UK) this spring and think I just might have to do this. Good to know the heads up on the booking timeframe. I’ve had to schedule my trip around a bucket list activity before and that can get difficult!

  16. Pretty dang cool. My oldest is a real potterhead. We live walking distances from Universal Orlando so we keep using that to try and lure him out. There’s actually a groupon right now for greatly discounted UO tickets for January and February. My walking distance, I mean that as the crow flies we are closer to Harry Potter World than park security.

I love it that they stop the train for the aquaduct. That is such an incredible shot that I would had having to lean out the window and hope for the best. I would definitely eat all of the HP themed foods too.

  17. This is so cool!! I would love to do this one day! We’ve been up to Scotland before but not had chance to do this. Next time we are home for a while we’re going to make sure we get back up there just for this!

  18. This is totally on my bucket list and same with my kids, ha! I didn’t know you could actually go over that bridge. What a magical adventure, thanks for sharing!

  19. I’m not a huge fan of Potter, but would love to ride on this train. It looks like such a fun experience. I’m gonna look into the first class cabin….fingers crossed the prices are reasonable as I’d really love to do this.

  20. I can remember the train being in London Kings Cross in the middle of the night when they filmed scenes here for the second film. I cant believe I got off a late night train from Newcastle (as I used to work on the intercity trains) to see the station turned into a filmset. memories. 🙂

  21. Harry Potter and literary connections aside, taking train trips that are both scenic and historic are something we love to do. Just added this to our list of trains to jump on when we next visit Scotland.

  22. Love Harry Potter and this seems like a really cool idea!! One day when I have no kids to take care of and extra money…. :::sigh:::

  23. I am so going to try this! I’ve been reading the books for the first time (I know) this year, and they are so magical.

  24. That looks so cool for all the Harry Potter fans. I know my sister and my nephew would have a blast.

  25. Wow this seems like a great way to explore Scotland! This Jacobite train is definitely on my travel bucket list.
