Things You Need To Know Before You Travel to Malaysia
If you are travelling to Malaysia sometime soon then you will want to make sure that you are prepared for the journey. This is easier said than done because even though you may think you have everything you need, there is a high chance that you don’t. For example, Malaysian weather can be really unpredictable so if you don’t have sandals and an umbrella then you may find yourself in an uncomfortable situation. If you want to avoid things like this, then take a look below to find out everything you’ve always wanted to know about travelling to Malaysia.
There are many Things You Need To Know Before You Travel to Malaysia that will make your travels easy and fun. #VisitMalaysia #ThingstodoinMalaysia #TravelToMalaysia Click To TweetTable of Contents
Flying
It’s more than possible for you to fly just about anywhere when you are in Malaysia. This is all thanks to airlines like AirAsia. They provide very low-cost travel. So when you look at sites like JetRadar, you’ll soon find that you can travel to more than 18 destinations with ease. This includes flying across the peninsula and even travelling to the far east of Malaysia as well. You can even have breakfast in Georgetown before you travel to the Borneo rainforest by lunch. Anything is possible and a lot of the flights are no-frills as well so you won’t ever end up paying more than you need. It’s as simple as that and you can easily hop from one destination to another.
Fair Taxis
A lot of drivers in Malaysia use meters to track how much the cost is going to be. The main thing that you have to watch out for here is that some taxi drivers are not licensed, and they won’t turn their meter on when you are travelling with them. This is so they can get more money from the people who are travelling with them and it can cause you real issues if you don’t know how to spot them. When you do choose to travel by taxi, it helps to make sure that the taxi that you are getting into is fully licensed and it also helps to make sure that they are turning the meter on as soon as you set off so you can avoid any extra charges. Some taxi drivers will even allow you to haggle the price as well, and this is a great way to keep the price down. If you are unsure about getting a taxi, make sure that you download a Malaysian booking app, as this is a great way to get connected with reputable drivers.
You Can Never Get Enough Milo
Did you know that Malaysia has the biggest Milo factory in the world? Ever since the 1950’s, Malaysia has been the biggest consumer of the drink (that is made from malt and cocoa). This drink is sold in local fast food restaurants and it is even sold in the local coffee shops as well. You can have this drink over ice and you can have it hot as well, and you probably won’t be able to go very far without seeing someone with a cup-full. Some providers even choose to make a Milo Godzilla, which is a Malaysian drink that consists of Milo with whipped cream on top. If that isn’t enough to make your mouth water, nothing will.
“Bacon” Isn’t Always Bacon
If you like to start off your morning with a bacon sandwich then you may experience some disappointment. Malaysia is classed as being one of the top three Muslim-friendly destinations in the world and therefore a lot of the food there has to meet certain requirements. A lot of the bacon served at buffets is actually made out of turkey, beef or even chicken for this very reason. If you do have a hankering for bacon or pork in general then the best thing that you can do is travel to Penang as this is known for its Chinese-run restaurants. It is very easy for you to find an open property or hotel in this area, as it is a very rich tourist destination.

Next To Ireland, They Have the Greatest Guinness
Did you know that Guinness is actually brewed in over 50 countries? Malaysia is known for having some of the best Guinness around and they even have the trophies to back this up as well. They were awarded the Guinness League of Excellence award and they have been given this over 5 consecutive years as well. This just goes to show that if you are a fan of Guinness, that you should certainly be planning your trip to Malaysia, because it really does have the best in the world (next to Ireland!).
One of the Things You Need To Know Before You Travel to Malaysia is that they have some of the best Guinness around. They even have the trophies to back this up as well. #Guiness #MalaysianBeer #BeerInMalaysia Click To TweetDuty-Free
Malaysia has a ton of stunning islands and that includes Langkawi. If you want to go on a travelling adventure then you have already found the right place. The problem is that the excess that is paid on beer is the second highest in the entire world and this means that you need a serious budget if you plan on drinking here. There are islands however, such as Labuan and even Tioman that have zones that are completely tax-free. These are also some of the most beautiful islands in the world, so you really can benefit from paying areas like this a visit.
Wildlife
It is a well-known fact that Malaysia is home to over 20% of the world’s species. It has ecosystems that are so rich and diverse that nothing else can compare, and if you are a fan of nature or wildlife then it could be your dream come true. The diversity is all natural and the Amazon Rainforest is nothing when compared to it. The Amazon Rainforest is 55 million years old, but when you look at Taman Negara in Malaysia, you’ll find that this is over 130 million years old. It is even said to be the world’s oldest area. There are also a huge range of natural parks as well so if you want to see wildlife up close then this is one of the best ways for you to do that. You can even see elephants and orangutans walking free in the wild, and this is a stunning sight to say the least. The waters around Sipadan are also some of the finest in the world, and they also have some of the best diving spots so if you want to see aquatic wildlife then this is certainly something that you don’t want to miss out on.

That’s pretty cool that they have the best Guinness outside of Ireland as I come from Ireland 😊 Although I’m not a fan of Guinness to be honest. Milo sounds like the kind of drink when served hot you’d curl up in bed with 😊
Thank you for posting this great blog post – I was traveling in Malaysia for a few weeks and I loved it! I can recommend it to anybody 🙂
Lovely post! I only got to spend a few days in KL a few years ago, but I’m hoping to be able to go back to Malaysia some day.
I love that you put Milo on this list. I spent my childhood in Indonesia, and we drank a lot of Milo there too. I think I would add that the food in Malaysia is pretty good too!
One of the best experiences was seeing a leather back turtle painfully make her way up the beach in the night and lay her eggs, then the next day we saw a tiny baby turtle in the nearby sanctuary making its way down to the sea. Absolutely awesome!
Excellent guide – I have had a couple of days in Malaysia as a long layover but don’t really know that much so this guide is very helpful! I had no idea about the bacon though – never would have dreamed it was anything else! And I’m also surprised about the Guinness too – who would have known!
Nice write-up. We went to Malaysia last year and loved it! So true – AirAsia makes it so easy to get around Malaysia. Those Milo dinosaurs were addictive!
Great suggestion about making sure the taxi meter is on. I did not know that the Malaysian Rainforest was older than the Amazon or that it contained 20% of the world’s animals.
That’s all useful stuff, especially the reminder about checking the taxi meter is on. I had no idea about there being so many animal species; that’s definitely upped Malaysia on my radar for a future trip.
I’m headed to Malaysia this year! Thank you for all the helpful tips. I had no idea about the Guinness thing, I would imagine not many people know that.
I visited Malaysia when I was living in Hong Kong. Love the paratha and curries although they can be spicy!
I never knew that Malaysia was a Muslim country! For some reason I thought it was Buddhist… so I learnt something new reading this! 🙂 My grandparents have been to Malaysia several times, and really enjoyed their trips there – I’ve yet to visit, but it’s on the list 😉 x
I’ve been to Malaysia twice and over the years it got stricter – whereby the east coast was extremely islamic already the first time I was there. So it’s funny that they have Guinness there since at many hotels there was either no alcohol at all or it was super-expensive.
Sometimes it was not very pleasant to travel as a women bye:myself….let’s see how things go on.
Taking a metered taxi is a great idea in so many countries. The last thing I want to do is start haggling with a driver, especially with my luggage in his trunk. I am already tired from travelling and don’t want any more annoyance.
It is very interesting to read most of these things. I did not know that bacon could be used for even beef and chicken in Malaysia but I do understand the logic of not serving pork because I live in a Muslim country as well (UAE). I guess it’s the same thing like in India when they call a burger ‘hamburger’, it could still mean that it is made of chicken, because beef is banned in India! It’s also good to know about the unlicensed taxi drivers, better to always take the metered ones of course. And its pretty cool that Air Asia connects almost every city, it’s easy to get from one place to another!

Wow, I didn’t think that Malaysia have a Guinness. And that is also good, beside that one in Ireland. Definitely one more reason to go and explore Malaysia. Thanks for sharing these tips! 🙂
Malaysia looks like a pretty cool place to visit. I didn’t know about it having the biggest Milo factory! Can you tour the factory itself?
I can’t believe that Malaysia has some of the best Guinness outside Ireland! One more excellent reason to visit!!
